Treasure on the Internet : A true David vs. 2 Goliaths

Entrepreneur Tyler Carlton has a $1,000,000 idea. Literally. Carlton's new company, Million Dollar Hunt LLC(milliondollarwebhunt.com), is holding a contest for $1,000,000.

Carlton's treasure hunting website appeared on the Internet allowing contestants to sign up to compete in mid January. With constant updates being performed, he had sponsor registration ready a few days later and his first press release went out on January 30.

The following day an article titled "Treasure to be found on the internet" was posted on cbc.ca regarding Yahoo and AOL doing similar style contests. It appears as though Yahoo has accused AOL of stealing their idea. This came as a shock to Carlton who said, "While Yahoo and AOL are trying to figure out who stole the idea from whom, I'm just going to have to work twice as hard to get my contest rolling."

"The contests appear quite different, though", Carlton said as he pointed out that his contest required NO travel. "Find our hidden treasure surfing from the comfort of your favorite armchair. Enjoy our contest's free sign up, and come win a million bucks," he said.

Here's how Carlton's contest works:

  1. Contestants can register free at www.milliondollarwebhunt.com from now until the contest begins.
  2. To prepare themselves for competition, registered contestants are encouraged to study sponsor websites even before the Million Dollar Web Hunt begins.
  3. During the Hunt contestants search for access keys on the sponsor websites, and then answer trivia questions to get the next clue. Never having to step outside of their homes.

"The best thing about the Million Dollar Web Hunt is that everybody wins," Carlton said. "Thousands of contestants compete in a fun challenge. Prize sponsors find themselves at the center of the contest, with their products and services at the center of attention. And, of course, the lucky winner gets up to a cool $1 million."

Contestants and sponsors are already signing up to participate in the Million Dollar Web Hunt. Contest registration has spread through high-tech word-of-mouth on popular networking sites like MySpace.com(myspace.com/milliondollarwebhunt).

"The contest sells itself," Carlton said. "Everyone likes a good treasure hunt - and the prize is irresistible."

Carlton said that while he hopes to start a new revolution in Web business, he also wants the Million Dollar Web Hunt to be fun.

"That was THE original idea," he said. "A fun contest, now let's pull together and take down the giants."
